On Saturday 14th September at the Stadio Armando Picchi, in Jesolo, Venice, Italy the quartet (Leanne Wellings, Katherine McDevitt, Annette Durkan and Sinead O’Regan) won a silver medal for W35 category for Ireland at The European Masters Athletics Championship.

Against all the odds, the team ran a record breaking 4 x100m relay at lightning speed to push the Polish team and hold off the strong challenge from opposing teams of France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, and Spain.

Although based in the UK, Leanne represents Ireland for Athletics and also represents her club Wycombe Phoenix Harriers in the UK and Metro St Brigids In Ireland – individually Leanne reached the semi-finals of both the 100m, ranking inside the top 10 and 200m. Earlier this year in March, she also represented Ireland as a member of the record-breaking quartet in the 4 x 200m who placed 4th in the World Indoor Masters Championships in Torun, Poland.

Furthermore, Leanne won bronze in the 2019 Irish Indoor National Championships over 60m in the W40 category and fantastic double gold winning performance over the 100m and 200m at the recent Irish Health National Outdoor Championships in Tullamore on August 19 in the W45 Category.

Alongside numerous Irish athletes to have competed in these Championships, this team’s success bought home a new victory. The European Masters Athletic Championship witnessed the Irish Team perform extraordinarily strong, claiming a total of 32 medals (12 Gold, 12 Silver and 8 Bronze). This resulted in Team Ireland finishing 14th out of 59 countries (only 35 countries medalled) – an outstanding performance relative to the population size.

Upon being awarded with their team relay silver medal, Leanne stated, “On paper there were faster runners individually from the other nations, but with our strong belief, mental strength and teamwork we combined to lead us to success. Our motto was we were not coming home without a medal! To show what positive role models we can be to women in sport, I am extremely proud of what we as a team of strong, powerful women have achieved. This is the core message, that I’d like to pass on to the budding future generation as well: don’t give up, stay motivated and keep your eye on the prize because everything else will fall in place”.
